Sculptor Profile
Phil Price
Born in Nelson in 1965, Phil Price is a leading New Zealand contemporary artist. The Canterbury-based sculptor gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Canterbury in 1989 and has exhibited extensively in both solo and group shows including the national survey shows, Prospect 2001 and Prospect 2004, both held at the City Gallery, Wellington.
Price is well known for his outdoor kinetic sculptures such as Zephyrometer (2003-04) located on Wellington’s Cobham Drive, Flip (2005) on Lambton Quay and Nucleus (2006), recently installed in central Christchurch. Price’s sculpture reveals his fascination for scientific discovery, both in his subject matter and methods. His recent kinetic sculptures possess organic forms (emphasised by titles such as Cytoplasm and Protoplasm), yet are major engineering feats in their construction involving teams of specialists.
Price enjoys the opportunity provided through public commissions to reach audiences beyond art galleries and to challenge viewers in new ways. His innovative use of colour is complemented with an unparalleled use of carbon composites, high engineering and design standards.
