Janna van Hasselt - Early Health

Regular diarying is a key part of my process.  I came to realise I’m only inspired to draw what is in front of me rather than sketching from memories of sights and experiences.  My work is always entirely current and created ‘in the moment’ with all imagery being sourced from my immediate environment at the time. In essence, the paintings in 'Early Health' serve as large diary sketches, to be viewed together like a series of snapshots.  Painted textile and surface patterns from my living and working environment create a solid foundation for the undulating movement of the printed remnants from 'The Muesli Bowl Project' that dance throughout each composition.  The scallop-edged container I use for fabric and thread scraps whilst sewing is a focal point in each work.  The carefully striped glossy areas form a juxtaposition to the softer substrate surfaces and also offer a transition towards future explorations into ceramics.                                                -  Janna van Hasselt
