Janna van Hasselt - Late Night Litho
I am a self-confessed routine junkie – some people need copious amounts of tea to get them out of bed – for me, just the thought of a large bowl of muesli and fruit does the trick! And don’t forget Bammetje (the all-purpose power snack), home-made hummous or lashings of spinach either – all very important ingredients in my daily routine. This series of works pays homage to all these food items, especially the unsung muesli grain. It is a commentary on how the simple things in life can bestow such strong feelings of security and comfort.
I am continuing to combine the mediums of print and paint together: the flatness of painted marks offsets the beautiful tonality possible with lithographic printing. Silk, rubber, leather and velvet are all materials I am drawn to because of the lush and comforting feelings their surface textures invoke in me.
The two artist books in the exhibition are a study of the seven artists I lived and worked alongside during my summer residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium. I was intrigued by how each artist maintained their daily routines and made their A-frame living quarters and workspace feel like home.
And the exhibition title? I have been a professional multi-tasker of late – balancing the demands of combining a day job with my full-time art practice. Many long (yet elevating) evenings were spent printing these works at the Amsterdams Grafisch Atelier – with only SkyRadio and my heavy (yet delicate) limestone friends to keep me motivated.
