Thomas Elliott
This exhibition is dedicated in memory of Graeme Elliott
Thomas Elliott has a very distinct style unlike anything happening in contemporary NZ art. Elliott’s work is visually striking and he has an original approach. There is reference to NZ artists such as Bill Hammond and Tony Fomison as well as the Renaissance art movement in terms of artistic influence though an independent and personal voice comes though with strong conviction.
Over the years subtle nuances in his oeuvre have developed his art practice with refinement of the figures and an increase in the light and compositions. The quality of his painting is extremely high and time consuming to produce. Working on hessian provides a textured ground and the turpentine based glaze leaves a slick varnished look so that these combined allow the light to shimmer across the painting. The groupings of figures have a universal sense of humanity though seen through an intimate eye. They have evolved as his family dynamics have changed and they offer emotive responses to strength in numbers and inner strength in difficult times. A spiritual sense of life, its importance and experience absorb the viewer. Then the close connections of each figure, their pose and interconnection with others intrigue and implore a dialogue of discovery between artwork and audience. Each painting has its own presence and purpose and together they provide a dynamic exhibition.
