Bing Dawe - Vagrants Stragglers and the Unloved

A series of carved wood sculptures where Bing Dawe is reconnecting to his craft based skill and the hands on nature of working with reclaimed wood, one of his preferred materials. The meticulous detail in these distinctive Dawe subjects emerge from the medium and come alive. An eel, black shag and trout along with other vagrants, stragglers or those unloved such as the hare from Central Otago create an installation of personality as they branch out from the gallery walls. The clear coated native wood forms develop into the head of each creature which are hand painted to a life like finish. These “studies” or “details” as they are termed are 3D sketches for potential sculptures though exquisitely resolved in themselves.
