Land, Sea & Sky
This exhibition is intended to explore the influence of the New Zealand environment on its people through the inspired talents of a large group of the Arthouse’s stable of artists covering the mediums of painting, sculpture and ceramic.
I have been motivated to curate this exhibition from the perspective of a British immigrant who has observed New Zealanders and the intrinsic link a nation has to their land and all that it encompasses. I have found it interesting seeing how a country is viewed within a global context as well as from the grass roots. A sense of pride, identity and understanding of oneself comes from the subjects of Land, Sea & Sky. With this exhibition I want to enjoy, expand and challenge this concept by offering the diversity of art practice in New Zealand as an instigator to discussion and understanding.
The subjects offer sources of inspiration to so many artists through spiritual significance, the geographical references, the habitats offered and as a medium. Each artist invited to exhibit has explored these themes previously in varying complexities.
