Down Under China
In April 2007, Cheryl Lucas, Moyra Elliott, John Parker, Richard Parker, Mark Mitchell and Chris Weaver converged on FuPing, China to spend six weeks working to produce ceramic pieces for the area’s new Australasian Ceramic Art Museum. FuPing is a small city of around one million people, located 65 kilometres north-northeast of Xi’an, home of the Qin Dynasty terra cotta warriors.
The residency studios are in a working brick and tile factory. The artists’ work was made in the heat and humidity of the Chinese summer, surrounded by workers trimming, cutting, stacking and hauling bricks and tiles, amid the roar of the long train kiln.
Although Moyra Elliott was unable to participate in this exhibition the Arthouse is very fortunate to include Elaine Henry, a highly regarded ceramic artist from the USA, who worked alongside the New Zealanders to produce work for the American Museum in FuPing.
The works produced for Down Under China, 13 Feb to 2 March 2008, reflect each of the artists current practices enriched with influences from their time in China.
