Artist Overview
Jane Mitchell
The impact of human occupation on the environment is a consistent theme in the paintings of Auckland artist Jane Mitchell. Her paintings present the lasting traces of historical land use with the imposition of architectural structures on the natural environment and the undermining of its terrain. Mitchell has developed an adventurous and distinctive approach utilising the painting support as a corollary for the land, hollowing into and building onto all available surfaces, featuring a rich palette of tones derived from the natural and urban environments.
