Artist Profile
John Crawford
John Crawford is well established as a key figure in the development of New Zealand ceramics. He is also known for his works on paper that reflect the tonality seen on recent vessels and recall the wild and rugged landscape of Westport where he lives and works. The images are developed from sketches and remembrances of his everyday surroundings and in particular the rooms of his home and studio.
Crawford layers oil stick on paper much the same as he layers his glazes on pottery creating depth and subtle surface texture. The use of line and process of mark making over geometric shapes provide abstract compositions with spatial awareness.
Crawford established his own studio in partnership with Anne Crawford over twenty years ago and has participated in exhibitions nationally and overseas in Munich and most recently in Hong Kong.
