Artist Profile

Janna van Hasselt

My Interest in Printmaking was influenced by a Nelson Polytechnic Summer School workshop taken by Michel Tuffery.  I chose to pursue printmaking in my second year of art school due to its combination of scientific and artistic aspects. I started to explore the themes of disintegration and decay through silkscreen and photo release. I continued to look at these issues in third year, concentrating on the development of these techniques and also consulting archaeology, Islamic writing and broken pottery patterns, and chemical structures.  Interested in the concept of revealing and concealing the inner structure of forms.

In 2004  I was accepted into the University of Canterbury International Exchange Programme to study for one semester at the Rhode Island School of Design in the USA.  There, I took courses in advanced lithography and colour intaglio as well as a critique class and participated in a single edition print project. I explored issues arising as a response to the new environment such as aerial landscapes and my student accommodation and created daily diaristic drawings made depicting specific experiences and emotions.

In April 2005 I graduated with a BSc in Linguistics and BFA in Printmaking and have plans to travel to Europe to take up a print internship or artist residency.
